The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs took on and defeated the Dimmitt Bobcats 67-63 to open district play. These two schools have formed a fun rivalry over the last couple years as in 2020-2021 Brownfield swept Dimmitt which resulted in a district title, and last season the two schools split their games, but Dimmitt would end up winning the district. This year many feel like the district champion will once again be one of these two schools and you could definitely feel the intensity Tuesday night. Both teams established a good pace early on as each got some good looks. As the 1st quarter came to a close it was ended on a 6-0 run after K.J Carrol, and Jojo Carrillo knocked down back-to-back 3 pointers and Brownfield was in front 17-13. The second quarter was a big one for the Runnin’ Cubs as Logan Shrimpton came off the bench and found himself scoring 6 points off a pair of three pointers which was a huge spark for the Runnin’ Cubs. The three-point shot was huge this quarter for Brownfield as the defense struggled some but never relinquished the lead thanks to their three-point shooting. Going into the break Brownfield led 36-28. In the 3 rd quarter Dimmitt came out more aggressive on both sides of the floor using their length to cause discomfort for Brownfield on the offensive side. However, at the end of the third quarter it was still Brownfield who led 47-44. Malik Mason who made his presence felt all night long took it to another level early in the 4 th quarter as he was all over the place, contesting shots, grabbing rebounds on defense and offense and cashing in those offensive boards with points. It was 51-44 when it became a track meet between both schools as each would get good looks and score but couldn’t get stops on defense. With 3:03 left in the game Brownfield still led 61-54. But Dimmitt wasn’t done yet, as they hit timely shots and Brownfield missed some key free throws which led to Dimmitt only trailing by 2 with 7.3 seconds left.

It was back and forth early in the game, but it wasn’t necessarily a game of great offense as both sides could go stale at moments and then in other moments both teams were finding easy looks and cashing in. By the end of the first quarter Dimmitt earned a 13-12 lead. In the 2 nd quarter Brownfield came out a lot more aggressive on the defensive end of the floor doing an excellent job of limiting Dimmitt to one shot offensively and creating a bunch of turnovers. Early in the quarter Brownfield could not capitalize in transition with the good looks they were getting, still trailing 14-16 Brownfield was finally able to get some looks to go in and it would result in them ending the half on a 12-2 run with the Lady Cubs leading 26-16.

Friday’s game started off a lot like most games for the Runnin’ Cubs this season getting up and down the floor early just not able to hit shots early on. Fortunately, just like most games Brownfields defense was pesky enough to keep it a low scoring affair. Malik Mason who came off the bench for a change, was something that actually proved to be needed giving Brownfield a much-needed spark with big offensive boards, and 4 quick points. By the end of the 1 st quarter the game was deadlocked at 10. In the 2 nd quarter Big Spring was able to find some offense early, while Brownfield sputtered a bit. JoJo Carrillo was called upon to hit timely shots that never allowed Big Springs to get much of a lead. With 2:00 left in the half Brownfield saw themselves down 19-16 after a 5-0 Big Spring run when Jeron Lawrence would knock down a NBA range 3 pointer to knot the game up at 19 and give Brownfield some pep in their step on the defensive side to end the half. Both squads were getting ready to go into the locker room, but a last second foul would send Pedro Rodriguez to the line for two free throws that he’d make and give the Cubs a 22-21 lead at the break.

Read moreLevelland travelled to ‘The PIT’ Tuesday night as they took on the Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs and left with a victory 49-42. Levelland brought in a team that carried some decent size and that showed early on as the length played a factor in the Cubs offensive possessions. Fortunately, the Cubs did just enough on the defensive side as well to force the Lobos into some turnovers as well. Jeron Lawrence helped jump start the Cubs offense scoring four of the first five points, by the end of the first quarter Brownfield was on top 12-9 after a 3-point shot was made by Pedro Rodriguez with a few seconds left. Coming out to start the 2nd Levelland scored back-to- back buckets which caused Coach McPherson to call a timeout. Out of the timeout Brandon Anthony was able to knock down a three to stop the short run. Both schools struggled to find consistent offense in the second quarter but most of that is a credit to the defense that was showcased on both sides. By the end of the second quarter Levelland worked to earn a 22-20 lead. This trend would continue in the second half for Brownfield as 3-point shots were not falling and trips to the free throw line would come up bare but would receive some sparks from the freshman Lawrence when the team really needed a bucket. Brownfield would go into the 4th quarter trailing 32-38. To start the 4th Levelland came out extremely aggressive and got to the basket to get some easy points and pad their lead. A small 5-0 run prompted another McPherson timeout as Levelland now led 37-28. Out of the timeout Brownfield was able to get some good looks and cash in for some points but was not able to get the stops that were needed to break into the deficit. Another timeout would be taken by Brownfield as Levelland now had a 41-32 lead. This time out created a spark that the Cubs needed to get back in the game as Lawrence would go on a 6-0 run on his own to pull his team within three. Levelland would call a timeout with 2:05 left in the ball game up 41-38, out of this timeout they would get a good look at the rim to add two more points to their lead, but Brownfield wasn’t done yet as the freshman Rodriguez hit a huge three to bring Brownfield within 2 points with 1:01 left in the game. Unfortunately, the comeback would fall short as Levelland was able to pull away from Brownfield and won the game 49-42. Brownfield was led in scoring by Jeron Lawrence who finished with 15, Pedro Rodriguez followed suit with 8, and JoJo Carrillo also had 5 on the night. The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs will be back in action Friday night as they will travel to Big Spring to take on the Steers. Tipoff is set for 7:30.
