Read moreAfter a tough loss Tuesday night in Littlefield, Brownfield needed to get back on track and they did exactly that after defeating Muleshoe 46-36. It was a slow start for both schools as the defenses were stout, both teams had some opportunities to score but were not able to cash in. By the end of the first quarter Brownfield held a 7-6 lead. The second quarter the defenses for both schools remained stout as they both quietly scored 10 points apiece and going into the halftime break Brownfield still led 17-6. Whatever the message was in the locker room from Coach McPherson it was received well as the Runnin Cubs came out on a 12-2 run fueled by aggressive defense. With 2:24 Muleshoe called a timeout to get them back on track and it worked as Muleshoe finished the quarter on a 5-0 run but Brownfield took a 29-22 lead into the final frame. Muleshoe did everything they could to find their way back in to the game but Brownfield never allowed Muleshoe to get themselves back in it. When Brownfield needed an answer in the fourth and they got it from junior guard JoJo Carrillo who had 9 fourth quarter points to keep Brownfield in the drivers seat, and Malik Mason was able to deliver the dagger as he nailed a mid-range jumper with a minute left in the game the final score being 46-36. Read moreThe Brownfield Lady Cubs were looking to get back on track Friday night against the Muleshoe Lady Mules but were unable to as they lost 62-41. Muleshoe came out of the gates looking good as they played great defensively enforcing a side defense cutting the court into a third, and the Lady Cubs struggled to adjust to it as turnovers were an issue in the quarter. Part of the issue was the Lady Cubs started the game trying to feed Jaelyn Molina inside the paint, but Muleshoe would not allow her to get a touch as they relentlessly jumped in the passing lanes. Muleshoe would capitalize on the turnovers in the first and use it to knock down 3 3’s in the first to get the offense rolling. The Lady Cubs best offense was out in transition when Muleshoe could not get their side defense initiated which is how Brownfield accounted for their 8 first quarter points. By the end of the first quarter the score was 13-8 in favor of Muleshoe. To start the second Muleshoe would go on a 9-3 run courtesy of good defense and finding ways to break down Brownfields defense. The Lady Cubs did have opportunities to get points on the board as they shot 12 free throws in the quarter but only cashed in on two of them. Going into the locker room Muleshoe led 30-14. In the third quarter Muleshoe remained aggressive on defense and never really allowed Brownfield to get anything going. Muleshoe used these turnovers to their advantage once more as they put up 20 points just in the third frame. At the end of the third quarter, they led 50-22. Brownfield never gave up as they continued to play hard, but the defense of Muleshoe proved to be too much as ultimately Brownfield would fall 62-42. Brownfield was led in scoring Alli Coffey who had 10, Kaylynn Fininen had 7, and Kayleigh Saldana and Jaelyn Molina both had 5. The Lady Cubs will be back in action at home on Tuesday night as they begin the second half of district play against Denver City. TipOff is set for 6:15 PM, a livestream of the game can be found on brownfieldcubs.com
Read moreBrownfield hit the road Tuesday night looking to remain undefeated in district play but were unsuccessful as Littlefield got the best of them and handed Brownfield their first loss 74-54. Both teams came out of the gate at full speed with Jeron Lawrence getting things started with a three for Brownfield. Both teams would get up and down the floor exchanging buckets. Littlefield towards the end of the quarter was able go on a small run to put them in front and give them an 18-12 lead going into the second quarter. Coming out to start the second frame Brownfields offense sputtered thanks to adjustments made by Littlefield, and breakdowns defensively cost Brownfield as they saw themselves down 23-13 midway through the second frame. Littlefield would go on to out-score Brownfield 17-12 to go into the locker room with a 4025 lead. Coming out of the break Littlefield was able to catch fire and used that momentum to propel their defense as well. JoJo Carrillo tried to get the Cubs back into the game going on his own 6-0 run with back-to-back threes but were quickly wiped away by Littlefield who had an answer on their end and would not allow Brownfield to catch momentum. Both teams would go back and forth but ultimately Littlefield was able to take a 52-38 lead going into the final frame. Littlefield would keep the pressure on in the fourth with their patient offense and ability to gash the Brownfield defense by making the extra pass for easy buckets as Littlefield continued to stay hot offensively. Unfortunately Brownfield chose a bad night to be off from beyond the arc as they were not able to claw back into the game despite valiant efforts from the Cubs. Littlefield pulled away with the 74-54 win handing Brownfield their first loss of district play. Brownfield will be back in action Friday night when Muleshoe makes the trip to ‘The PIT’ where tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
Read moreThe Brownfield Lady Cubs dropped their second district game of the season losing to the Littlefield Lady Wildcats 56-38. Once again the Lady Cubs were without their leader Rhianna Miranda who’s still nursing an injury. Jaelyn Molina jump started the offense as she made a layup and was sent to the free throw line for a chance for a three point play and she would capitalize. Unfortunately those 3 points would be all the Lady Cubs would have for a while as Littlefield would force a couple of turnovers to get easy buckets and began to utilize full court pressure that bothered the Lady Cubs as they would have 10 first quarter turnovers that carried the Lady Cats an 11-0 run at one point. The second half of the first quarter would be a different story as the Lady Cubs were able to make some adjustments and get some stops on the defensive side while getting some baskets. Brownfield was able to outscore Littlefield 7-4 to end the first but would ultimately be trailing 18-10 going to the second frame. The story would feel the exact same as the first quarter with Littlefield coming out on a 8-2 run to start before Amery Pauda would end the run. Once again the Lady Cubs would outscore the Lady Cats to end the quarter but went into the locker room trailing 31-22. The halftime break did no good for the Lady Cub offense as they did not hit their first field goal of the half till 3 minutes in when Lucy Guzman nailed a much needed jumper. Both teams exchanged rather long possessions in the 3 rd quarter which shortened the game. But going into the 4 th Brownfield was still in it only trailing 41-31. Unfortunately Littlefield was able to put a lot of pressure forcing Brownfield into a bunch of turnovers and resulted in a 9-0 run that virtually shut the door for the Lady Cubs. They would not stop fighting as they tried to dig into the deficit but on this night Littlefield took advantage of your turnovers and would go on to win the ballgame 56-38. The Brownfield Lady Cubs will be back in action Friday night as they welcome in Muleshoe and look to get back on track in district, tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.

Read moreThe Runnin Cubs remain undefeated in district play through three games after downing the Golden Tornados 62-46. There are so many different words or phrases that come to mind when talking about Brownfield vs Lamesa on the basketball court a couple of those being “big time rivalry” and “instant classic.” Both of those were exactly how you would describe Friday’s meeting between the two schools. It was a fast-paced game right out of the gate, but early on it was in favor of Lamesa who scored the first 6 points of the game capitalizing off winning the tipoff, a Brownfield missed shot, and a Brownfield turnover. JoJo Carrillo would help settle down the Cubs as he would open the scoring and after seeing that first bucket fall there was a sense of calmness for the team. Both schools would continue to run up and down the floor till Lamesa called its first timeout of the game as they held a 12-10 lead with 2:45 left in the first quarter. The time would wind fast with Lamesa outscoring Brownfield 7-5 in the final 2:45 of the quarter and they had a 19-15 lead going into the second. Brownfield would open the second frame on a 7-0 scoring run making the score 22-19 in favor of the Runnin Cubs that would be ended by a Golden Tornado free throw, but that would be there only point for a while as they endured a scoring drought thanks to Brownfield doing a great job holding Lamesa to one shot on many possessions and forcing them to turn the ball over as well. Lamesa however would fight back some before going to the halftime break sparking a 5-0 run, but Brownfield still led 27-25. Out of the break the scoring slowed down a bit due to both teams running some sets in the half court and turning the ball over. But Brownfield would end the 3 rd quarter on a 9- 2 run and led going into the last frame 45-31. Just when you thought Brownfield could pull away Lamesa was able to tighten up the defense and go on a 13-2 scoring with the score now being 47-44 still in favor of the Runnin Cubs but there was still plenty of game left with 4:52 on the clock. Fortunately, everyone for Brownfield stepped up when their number was called and slammed the door shut going on a huge 15-2 run and winning the game 62-46. Brownfield was led in scoring by Malik Mason with 15, while Pedro Rodriguez finished just behind him with 14, Jeron Lawrence put up 11, and KJ Carroll and JoJo Carrillo had 9, and 8 respectively. The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs will be back in action Tuesday night as they’ll be in Littlefield taking on the Wildcats. Tipoff is set for 7:30 and a livestream broadcast of the game can be found on brownfieldcubs.com
