Read moreThe Brownfield Lady Cubs took to the road for their final game of the regular season as they took on the Muleshoe Lady Mules and defeated them 45-40 Things started off interesting for Brownfield as the Lady Cubs were going against full court pressure and struggled to get their offense going to the tempo they would’ve liked, meanwhile Muleshoe capitalized on this and started the game on a 13-3 run. During this run Muleshoe also elected to play four on four in the halfcourt choosing to face guard Rhianna Miranda. This caused some problems for the Lady Cubs till finally they were able to make the adjustments they needed to get some traction in the game. From that point on Brownfield would outscore Muleshoe 8-4 and go into the second quarter trailing 1711. To start the second quarter Brownfield would keep the momentum going with a 7-2 run to pull within one point of Muleshoe 19-18. The Lady Cubs continued to play well on the defensive side only allowing a total of 5 points in the frame as they went into the locker room with a 25-22 lead. Two minutes into the third quarter was when Jaelyn Molina finally got some points on the board for the Lady Cubs, but the Lady Mules would then score 5 straights of their own to tie the game up at 27. Brownfield endured a bit of a scoring drought during the third quarter before Kaylynn Fininen got t w o p o i n t s on the board quickly followed by a Molina three to give them a 32-27 lead. Muleshoe would stop the short 5-0 run with a three to make it a one possession game until Jaelyn Molina knocked down a mid-range jumper to end the quarter with Brownfield leading 34-30. Both teams to start the fourth were exchanging buckets on both ends of the floor as the pace and intensity picked up in the fourth. Alliey Coffee knocked down a three pointer to make it a 9-point game, but Muleshoe didn’t go away easily as they deployed their full court pressure once more to create a ton of Brownfield turnovers but fortunately for the Lady Cubs the Lady Mules were not able to capitalize on said mistakes only being able to trim it down to a 4-point Muleshoe deficit. The Lady Cubs would go on to win 45-40, the win helps Brownfield qualify for the Texas High School Playoffs and they will now wait to see who their next opponent is and where the game will be.

A loss Tuesday meant a do or die situation on Friday in Denver City. From the moment the ball was tossed into the air both schools started at a fast and furious start combining for 11 points in the first 2 minutes of the ballgame with Brownfield in front 7-4. The offense would go could for Brownfield after the quick start only scoring two more points the rest of the quarter while Muleshoe managed to put up six and take a 10-9 lead into the second quarter. To start the second Muleshoe would come out guns a blazing going on a 8-0 run and leading 18-9 while Brownfield struggled to get some clean looks. This was put to an end by JoJo Carrillo who drained a 3 pointer to stop the bleeding. Carrillo’s jumper did more than just that as the Runnin’ Cubs would utilize a 13-0 run to climb back in front 22--18 before Muleshoe was finally able to get a score and stop their drought. By the end of the second quarter Brownfield hung on to a three-point lead, 23-20. The third quarter was as back as forth as things could get for both schools. There were 5 ties and 5 lead changes in the third. Brownfield put up 18 points in the third while Muleshoe put up 21. Heading to the fourth quarter it was all tied up at 41. In the fourth quarter things remained back and forth as both schools exchanged buckets, but when Brownfield needed stops the most, they were able to get them and got big time points from Pedro Rodriguez to take the lead and stay in the lead for good. Muleshoe didn’t go away easily but never got in a position to reclaim a lead as Brownfield shut the door and won 70-54 officially clinching a spot in this year’s Texas High School Playoffs. Brownfield will be back in action this Friday as they hit the road for their regular season finale against the Denver City Mustangs and look to avenge the loss Denver City handed them earlier this season.
