Lady Cubs open season with a big win

The Brownfield girls’ basketball team had to wait an extra eight days to open the 2020-21 season after its home game against Ft. Stockton was canceled. That made the home game against Lubbock Christian on Saturday the season home opener. The Lady Cubs, who came into the game as Texas Association of Basketball Coaches preseason ranked No. 13, grounded the Lady Eagles 71-48 behind its up-tempo offensive.

CUBS UNABLE TO FLY WITH EAGLES

The Brownfield boys’ basketball team hosted Lubbock Roosevelt on Saturday afternoon in its second game of the season. Yet Saturday afternoon was not a great offensive showing for the Cubs as they lost at home 60-33. On the offensive end, the Cubs struggled to run head coach Zayne McPherson’s offense, create open looks, driving lanes, and hit any open looks. The struggles on the offensive end leaked into the defense as the home team lost the rebound battle and let the Eagles have multiple chances. The Cubs coach took full responsibility for the sloppy showing on Saturday.

CUBS LOSE SECOND STRAIGHT GAME

The Brownfield boys’ basketball team went on the road Monday afternoon to face the Hereford Whiteface. The Cubs were looking to bounce back from the 60-33 loss to Lubbock Roosevelt on Saturday, Nov. 21st; but the Cubs could not find an offensive flow in their 71-38 loss to Whiteface.

LADY CUBS HOLD OFF LATE RALLY FOR ROAD WIN

After three strong quarters on both ends of the court, the Brownfield girls’ basketball team looked like it would win its second game in a row in another blowout win. But Tascosa had one last rally in the fourth quarter and cut a 20 point lead down to 11 before the Lady Cubs retook control and held on for a 73-60 win on Monday evening.

BRONCOS OFFENSE STRUGGLES AT HOME

After winning its season road opener, the Meadow boys’ basketball team played its home opener against O’Donnell on Friday night. The Broncos who won their first game behind their offense, struggled Friday night at home losing to the Eagles 47-32. Brady Caswell led the Broncos with 11 points and Wes Woodard added nine.

Brownfield Sales Tax Allocations Down Over 6% Year to Date

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced on Friday, Nov. 13 he will send cities, counties, transit systems, and special purpose taxing districts $890.5 million in local sales tax allocations for November, 4.8 percent more than in November 2019. These allocations are based on sales made in September by businesses that report tax monthly, and on sales made in July, August, and September by quarterly filers.
