Vineyard festival helps promote local companies

The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce 9th Annual Grape Capital of Texas was held last weekend at Reddy’s vineyard. The two-day festival brought wine lovers together to enjoy the food and wines from the many vineyards in Terry County and a few from other areas in the state, as well as a tour of three local vineyards. Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Director Lorena Valencia spoke to the Brownfield News about the success of this year’s festival.

Drought conditions down statewide

As monsoon season continues, Terry County and the state have continued to receive rain. According to West Texas Mesonet, Brownfield began with 0.28 inches of rain and saw it reach 0.61 inches. This put the total amount of rainfall for the month of July at 0.84 inches, and the total for the year at 11.19 inches.

BROWNFIELD FOOTBALL OPENS WITH MIDNIGHT CONDITIONING

The University Interscholastic League(UIL) set Monday, August 2, as the first day of conditioning for the upcoming 2021-2022 football season, and the Brownfield football team took advantage once the clock hit midnight on Monday. The Cubs opened the season and its start of two-a-day practices with their Midnight Madness practice, which originally was scheduled to be done on their field but due to weather was moved into the field house. Brownfield had its varsity and junior varsity players come together to open practice in front of a small crowd who came to watch and support the players and coaches.

BRMC clinic director speaks on COVID Delta Variant

Lately, there has been a lot of news about the new variant of COVID (Delta variant) and how it has caused a spike in cases. In Terry County there are seven active cases of COVID, it is not known if they are the standard COVID or Delta variant, which puts the total cases diagnosed at 1,711. The county has seen 1,659 recover from the virus but there have been 45 deaths putting the mortality rate at 2.63 percent. The number of people who have been diagnosed is 1.83 out of 10 county residents have contracted COVID. Brownfield Regional Medical Center Clinic Director Michael Tackitt spoke about the variant, what BRMC is doing to help those infected with COVID, and gave his personal advice to those who are not vaccinated.
