Brownfield High School Junior Jayden Gonzales signed his letter of intent to play football at Howard Payne University Wednesday at Brownfield High School. Gonzales received second- team Nickelback for his play this past season.
Read moreThe Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs defeated the Kermit Yellowjacket 69-64 in the Bi-District round of the playoffs 69-64. It’s often said that basketball is a game of runs, and Tuesday proved to be just that. Brownfield came out the gates red hot on an 8-0 run, but Kermit answered with a 130 run. By the end of the first quarter, the game was tied at 13. In the second quarter, both teams would go back and forth exchanging buckets, Brownfield had to earn a lot of their looks with Kermit running a 2-3 zone forcing the Brownfield offense to be patient. Later in the quarter Brownfield began to use their full-court pressure to create turnovers and easy opportunities in transition, which paid off and allowed them to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room. Out of the halftime break, Kermit came out hot, going on an 8-0 and reclaiming the lead 31-30. But from that point on, Brownfield would outscore Kermit 2012 to take a 50-43 lead into the final quarter of play. Despite Kermit’s best efforts trying to make a last-minute run back into the game, Brownfield did a great job holding the door shut to leave with the 69-64 win. Brownfield advances to the Area round of the playoffs, where they will meet the #3 Shallowater Mustangs.

Read moreThe Brownfield Runnin’Cubs took on the Littlefield Wildcats and lost 78-43. The two schools met up for an important rubber match to decide who was going into the playoffs with the number one overall seed for the district and number two overall seed. Coming out to start the game the Runnin’Cubs had the momentum during the first quarter forcing the Wildcats into plenty of turnovers however couldn’t capitalize on all of them only taking a 10-7 lead into the locker room. Littlefield in the second frame was able to flip the momentum to their side as they found their offensive flow outscoring Brownfield 22-9 and taking a 29-19 lead into the locker room. Coming out of the halftime break, Brownfield tried to claw their way back into the game but for every basket they scored Littlefield had an answer. During the third quarter Brownfield went through a tough scoring drought that Littlefield took advantage of as they stretched their lead, and in the fourth quarter they continued to stretch their lead ultimately putting Brownfield away 78-43. Brownfield is now the #2 seed in the district and will begin their playoff push in Andrews on Tuesday where they will take on the Kermit Yellowjackets.
