The Wellman-Union powerlifting team traveled to Frenship Saturday to compete at the Tiger Invitational. It was a tough weekend for some of the Wildcats but Micaela Escobar led the team with a ninth-place finish in her division.
Read moreThe Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs defeated the Friona Chieftans on the road Tuesday night in dominating fashion 75-36. After suffering a loss last week to Littlefield, Brownfield dropped out of the TABC rankings but showed Tuesday night that won’t hinder them from their goals at hand. Even without the services of Brason Salas, Trae Timmins, and Quavience Busby the Runnin’ Cubs controlled the game from start to finish. Jeron Lawrence led the Runnin’Cubs in scoring with 19, followed by JoJo Carrillo who had 16, while George Rivera finished with 12 and KJ Carroll finished with 11. Brownfield remains at tied at the top of the district standings with Littlefield but control their own destiny as if they win out they’ll win atleast a share of the district championship. Up next on Friday night the Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs will take on the Muleshoe Mules in what will be the final game of the season in ‘The PIT’ where both the Lady Cubs and Runnin’ Cubs will honor their seniors.

The Lady Cubs’offense got off to a quick start in the opening quarter to take an early 12-5 lead. The Lady Cubs continued to dominate on both sides of the ball to outscore the Squaws 15-5 to extend their lead to 27-10 heading into the break. Despite scoring a game-high of nine points in the third quarter, the Squaws could not match the Lady Cubs’12 points to extend Brwonfield’s lead to 39-19 heading into the final quarter. The Lady Cubs sealed the game after recording 17 points in the final quarter for the 56-27 win over Friona.

The other thing to note of this district is that all four teams are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs as 4 teams from each district qualify.

Read moreThe Lamesa Lady Golden Tornadoes’ offensive surges in the opening and final quarter guided them to a 31-24 win over the Brownfield Lady Cubs Friday. The Lady Tornadoes’ offense came out red hot to outscore the Lady Cubs 15-2 to take the lead after the opening quarter. The Lady Cubs’ defensive adjustments paid off in the second quarter to hold the Lady Tornadoes to a single basket and Cut Lamesa’s lead to 17-7 heading into the second half. The Lady Cubs began to find a rhythm after the break to cut Lamesa’s lead to 1914 heading into the final quarter. The Lady Tornadoes answered back in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Lady Cubs 12-10 to hold off Brownfield for the 31-24 victory. Alliey Coffey led the Lady Cubs with eight points, Amery Pauda led with two assists, Mariah Perez led with eigh rebounds and Audry Davis led with five steals.
Read moreAfter a loss the last time out the Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs looked to get back to their winning ways Friday night against Lamesa and they did just that with their 61-57 win over the Golden Tornadoes. Brownfield was once again shorthanded on Friday night as they were without the services of Quavience Busby, Trae Timmins, and Brason Salas. Kaden McPherson did make his return to action but saw limited minutes in his first game back. After one quarter of play it was Lamesa who saw themselves with a 12-11 lead due to a slow start for the Runnin’Cubs. A jolt of offense in the second quarter helped Brownfield take a 28-20 lead into the locker room. Coming out of the break Brownfield maintained their lead but Lamesa wasn’t going down easy as it was 45-40 going into the final frame of play. The fourth quarter was an intense one for both sides as Lamesa continued to scratch and claw their way to stay in the game and keep Brownfield on their toes but ultimately their comeback was spoiled as Brownfield won the game 61-57. Jeron Lawrence notched another double-double on the season with 25 points and 16 rebounds which is a career high for himself. George Rivera finished with 9 points, while KJ Carroll, and JoJo Carrillo both chipped in with 8 points themselves.
