The Meadow boys’ basketball team faced Plains in its first home game since Thanksgiving break on Tuesday. The Broncos lost at home to the Cowboys 71-38. Meadow came out and kept the game close in the first quarter trailing 18-10, but the offense went cold in the second where the Broncos scored only eight points and allowed the Cowboys to score 21. Meadow went into the half trailing 39-18. The Broncos offense came to life in the third quarter scoring 12 points but the defense allowed the Cowboys to score 15 and extend the lead to 54-30 going into the fourth. Plains held off Meadow and stopped any chance of the home team making a late rally to win the final quarter 17-8.
Read moreThe Wellman-Union girls’ basketball team hosted Lorenzo on Tuesday in its first game since the Thanksgiving break, the Lady ‘Cats lost 56-23. The Lady ‘Cats found themselves in a 10 point hole at the end of the first quarter trailing 17-7. Wellman made a push in the second quarter scoring 10 points, but it was not enough as Lorenzo scored 16 to extend its lead to 33-17 at halftime. The Lady Hornets defense in the second half held the Lady ‘Cats to only eight points, two in the final quarter, ending any chance of a late rally.

Instead, the Wildcats hosted New Home’s junior varsity squad and lost 85-63. The Wildcats’ loss came from having a bad first quarter where they trailed 19-8. Wellman could not recover and erase the deficit in what was an even three quarters, with the home team trailing 44-29 at halftime. Wellman came out of the break and tried to mount a rally to get back in the game but at the end of the third, the Wildcats trailed 70-47. Wellman went on to win the fourth quarter 16-15 but it was not enough to steal a win from New Home JV.
Read moreThe Yoakum County Connection has honored the Plains High School Cowboy Marching Band with a financial grant to support their trip to San Antonio this December to compete in the Texas State Marching Band Championships! The Plains Cowboy Marching Band earned straight Division 1 ratings at the October 24 UIL Regional Competition advancing them to the UIL Area competition on November 14 where they distinguished themselves as a finalist, and finished in second place securing a position in the 2A State Championships. The 2A Championship Competition will take place in San Antonio on December 14 in the Alamodome and will be broadcast as a live stream on https://box5tv.com/. “We are thrilled with our student’s dedication and hard work that earned them this opportunity. We are also grateful to all our supporters in Yoakum and surrounding counties, and particularly to the Yoakum County Connection for this very useful and timely gift. While it’s just my second year in Plains, I’ve been impressed with the support shown to our students and organization,” stated Robert Rumbelow, director of bands at Plains ISD. This isn’t Rumbelow’s first time at the state marching championships having been there as a student at two different schools (including the 1979 Brownfield High School Band) and as a director at three high schools before and after his 20 year university teaching career. He and his wife live in Lubbock and love helping West Texas band programs discover their excellence.

Read moreThe Brownfield football team finished the season 1-7 overall and 1-3 in district missing out on the playoffs due to the team forfeiting the final game due to COVID. Though the season did not end the way the Cubs would have liked, many of their players received the honor of being selected to the All-District first and second teams by the coaches in District 1-3A.
Read moreThe All District selections for 4A team tennis have been released, and the Brownfield Cubs came home with substantial rewards. Darian Alvarado was named newcomer of the year for the district and first team all district in singles. Ebony Constancio earned first team all district in singles as well after a very good year for the junior. Coach Rich Hammons said “every player in our top seven boys and girls earned all district recognition. We were one of only a handful of 3A schools that competed at the 4A level, and we finished as bi-district champions. Our team continued to improve throughout the year and our depth improved, as evidenced by the all distict selections.” The full list of honors is as follows:
