The Wellman-Union boys’ basketball team hosted Sands on Tuesday looking to avoid its fifth straight loss and earn its first win of the season. The Wildcats put up a fight but fell 79-41 to Sands. The Wildcats ended the first quarter trailing 23-12, but had a bad second half where they scored only five points to go into the break trailing 39-17. After the break, Wellman found its offense scoring 18 points but the defense allowed 24 points to the visitors. The Wildcats needed a big rally in the fourth to erase a 63-35 deficit but Sands held them to only six points.

Both the Lady Cubs and Lady Bronchos came into the game in the midst of winning streaks with Brownfield having won all four games and Odessa winning its last three. In a very even match the Lady Cubs used a 24-8 second quarter run to create the separation needed to win their fifth straight game, defeating the Lady Bronchos 63-50.

What began as a close game that saw the Cubs compete with the Mustangs for one quarter, turned into a 96-54 blowout loss. The length, height, and athleticism of the Mustangs, which had three players miss dunk attempts in the game, hurt the Cubs causing them to start falling apart in the second quarter.

Read moreThe Brownfield girls’ basketball team defeated New Home 65-39 to remain a perfect 4-0 in the season, with only the game against Ft. Stockton being canceled. This was a game of two halves for the Lady Cubs with the first half being a game played at New Home’s tempo and the second played at the Lady Cubs up tempo game. Yet Lady Cubs coach Michelle Wyatt was pleased with her team’s performance especially in the second half.
Read moreThe Meadow girls’ basketball team returned to its home court on Tuesday and faced Plains in what turned into a one-sided affair as Plains defeated Meadow 70-23. The Lady Broncos fell into a huge deficit, 20-9, after a slow start on both ends of the court. The second quarter did not get better for the Lady Broncos or their fans as they were held to only two points and allowed Plains to score 22 points. Meadow went into halftime trailing 42-11. Meadow could not find a way back into the game and scored only 12 points in the second half.
