The Wellman-Union girls’ basketball team fell to Whiteface 54-20 in its District 7-1A opener on Tuesday night. Sadie Crowley led the Lady ‘Cats with 7 points and Kenzie Harp added 6 points in the loss. The Lady ‘Cats struggled offensively in the first half scoring only 6 points by halftime. They were able to get a rhythm in the third quarter scoring 13 points but any chance of a comeback was stopped when Whiteface held Wellman to 1 point in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cubs improve to 6-0 in District 3-3A and continue in first place and in position to win back-to-back District 3-3A titles. The Lady Cubs had four players finish in double digit scoring with Ashley Ramirez and Deja Johnson both scoring 16 points a piece and Shy’la Blackwell and Gabi Fields both scoring 12 points each. Tia Johnson led the team in rebounds with 11 with 8 on the defensive boards and assists with 5. Fields led the team in steals with 8. As a team the Lady Cubs outrebounded Lamesa 36-21 overall, 33-27 on the defensive end, and 13-10 on the offensive end. They had 18 steals and 20 assists, and forced Lamesa into 13 turnovers.
