Our Promise Youth Academy is offering fun summer programs for kids. It’s “just to have fun,” explained Program Director Johnny Trevino. He further explained that at Our Promise Youth Academy the staff encourage the kids to be themselves and interact with each other. “I had one parent tell me, he’s way different now he has more friends and he’s enjoying it more, and he’s more talkative.” Johnny Trevino says that his strategy is to “try to think like a kid.” “Especially with this job you have to be a kid yourself.” He pays attention to the trendy things that exist in kids’ lives, “especially with video games.” The facility has a Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo Switch for the kids to play, and the staff listens and engages with the kids to learn which new games they want to play the most. Beyond video games they have the kids play sports, and do crafts that Johnny Trevino sources crafts from browsing Pinterest, and “as of right now we’re going to try to go to the pool every week.”

The city is going to start “strip paving those streets.” Jeff Davis added, with a few more meetings to determine specific streets, “hopefully we’ll get this thing going by the summer.” Matt Wade, the City Attorney, said the agreement between the city and paving company is safe, “there’s not a lot of risk.”
