Terrance “Terry” McClure

Terrance “Terry” McClure, aka T-Bird, 76, passed away July 12, 2020, with his family by his side in Wichita, Kansas. Terry was born March 29, 1944, in Wichita, to Richard and Ann (Robinson) McClure of Maize, Kansas. He graduated from Maize High School in 1962 and earned degrees in Biology and Physical Education at Friends University in 1967. Terry married Ingrid (Leo) McClure in 1967 and celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this past June. Terry taught Physical Science at Homer Hanna High School in Brownsville, Texas for 25 years. He and Ingrid enjoyed retirement together for 22 years. Terry had a lifelong passion for hot rod cars, amateur radio, radiocontrolled models, and shooting sports. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends. Terry was a member of the First Congregational Church of Maize, the Scandinavian Society of Wichita, and the National Rifle Association. Terry is lovingly remembered by his wife Ingrid of Maize, Kansas, son Erin (Nicolette) of Wichita, granddaughter Loralei, son Brian (Michelle) of Colwich, his brother, Eric (Vici) McClure of Brownsville, Texas, nephew Joshua McClure of Colwich, grandnephew Jack, nephew Gabriel McClure of Austin, Texas, grandnephew Asher, niece Caitlin McClure of San Antonio, Texas, and grandniece Mila. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the Ark Church, 5501 N Maize Rd, Maize, Kansas at 10 am. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon following the service at the Old Country Store at 5201 N Maize Rd. Masks are encouraged but not required and social distancing will be observed. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be given to the First Congregational Church Elevator Fund, PO Box 207, Maize, Kansas, 67101, a cause which was very important to Terry.

Local Girls Take Part In Water Program

As the summer continues with hot and dry conditions in Terry County, one group is trying to make sure people know about the importance of water. Four years ago the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension and Texas 4-H began the Texas 4-H Water Ambassadors Program. This program is promoted through the Texas Alliance of Groundwater Districts (TAGD)in which the South Plains Underground Water Conservation District (SPUWCD) is a part of.

Quintanilla graduates from Texas State Trooper Academy

Houston Quintanilla, a 2012 graduate of Meadow ISD, has graduated from the Texas State Trooper Academy. He will be stationed in the Midland District. He began his training on January 14th. Quintanilla, who graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in biology, first began working in the Crime Labs as a DNA investigator after being encouraged to look into the academy. Trooper Quintanilla was an all star athlete in high school and was always interested in the field as well as helping others. He volunteered to serve with the National Guard during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, and it was there that he learned of the opportunities that would await him. The graduating ceremony for the Academy was held Friday, July 17th, with Texas Governor Greg Abbott making an appearance. Abbott congratulated the class on their hard work and their Academy journey throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Trooper Quintanilla was honored by the appearance. During the ceremony it was also announced that Quintanilla had ranked number one in the fitness category of his graduating class. Houston Quintanilla is the son of Marty Quintanilla and Kimberly McArthur.

County Seeks 8% Tax Hike Amid COVID Disaster

In the Texas 86th Legislative session held in 2019, Texas Governor Greg Abbott put his signature on Senate Bill 2 (SB2) which passed both chambers and is a bill designed to limit property tax growth. SB2 was originally filed and sponsored by Terry County’s District 85 House Rep. Dustin Burrows. The purpose of Burrows being the sponsor and it coming out of the Senate and not the House is because Burrows’ bill was identical to the Senate bill. So the House and Senate filed a “Degree of Association.”
