Melvin “Doc” Edgar Eaker

Melvin “Doc” Edgar Eaker, 89, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2020 in Katy, Texas. He was born August 1, 1931 in Plains, Kansas to Willie Bell (Lazenby) and Melvin Eaker. One of four boys, he attended schools in both O’Donnell and Uvalde High Schools where he graduated in 1948 and attended Tarleton State College. Additionally, Doc proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Edgar or “Doc” as he was more readily known as, was a custom harvester for over 60 years. He and his crew cut grain from Central Texas to the Canadian border and returned to the High Planes to cut the fall crops of milo and sunflowers every year. He was even inducted into the U.S. Custom Harvesters Hall of Fame in 2000 and helped establish a scholarship fund along with his then wife, Shirley†. Doc is preceded in death by his parents (Melvin and Willie), brothers Jimmy and Kenneth. He is survived by his wife Elaine of Katy, his brother, Harold Eaker of Uvalde, son Gordon Eaker of Uvalde, daughters Lynette Eaker of Hurst, and Charla (Cliff) Hatfield of Sinton. He is also survived by his three grandchildren: Alex (Carlos) Perez of San Diego, Carlee (Ryan) Olson of Corpus Christi, and Cooper (Nina) Hatfield of Corpus Christi, six greatgrandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Elaine has her children V.L. Morris, Kay (Ted) Woods and Lynda (Rick) Baker by her side through the losing of her beloved husband, Doc. Due to current health and safety concerns, the memorial services for Doc will be held in both Uvalde, TX and O’Donnell, TX at a later date to be announced so that we may honor Doc’s wishes to be cremated and his ashes to be scattered in a wheat field. Because of the current 4221 34TH ST LUBBOCK, TX 79410 conditions and Doc’s love of harvesting, we ask that 806-796-1040 in lieu of flowers for the family, donations be made to the U.S. Customer Harvesters Scholarship Fund. Donations may be sent to:
