Historic church leaving town

A special historic building will be moving from Brownfield around mid-September headed to the National Ranching Heritage Center (NRHC) in Lubbock. Spur Ranch Church (Good Shepherd Episcopal Church) located at 304 E. Lanny Ave is a one-room church built on Spur Ranch land in 1912 three years after the ranch platted land for the then new settlement of Spur, Texas. Decades later the church was relocated to Brownfield where it currently sits.

Lillie Mae Willis

Services for Lillie Mae Willis, 96, of Post will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at Brownfield Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Garland Stueart officiating.Lillie Mae went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 22, 2020. She was born on October 12, 1923, in Brownfield to Jim and Etta Abney. She lived in Brownfield until 1964 and worked for the hospital for 15 years. Lillie Mae was a godly woman and a member of the Church of Christ. She loved her family, especially her children and her grandchildren. Lillie Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Willis; 3 sons, Troy, Johnny, and Roy Willis; parents, Jim and Etta Abney; sister, Dorothy Marsh and 3 brothers, James, Ray D, and Lester Abney. Lillie Mae is survived by her 2 sons, Coy Willis and wife Kay of Graham and Jimmy Willis of Lubbock; daughter, Annett Riggs and husband Ronnie of Post and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Olivia Competio

Mary Olivia Competio, a dearly loved wife, mother and grandma, Momo, and unofficial mom and grandmother to more students in the Wellman school system than she could have realized, passed from this life and into her eternal rest on August 24, 2020 at the age of 77 years and 17 days. She was born on August 7, 1943, to Edward and Susie Hilburn. She met and married the love of her life, Frank Competio, at the age of 14 and they began to build a family legacy that has spanned generations and will continue to do so. She was no stranger to hard work and she instilled that quality in all of her kids, and made sure that it was passed down to the future generations as well. Together with Frank, she raised 8 children and family get togethers were the highlight of every season and holiday, with every corner of the house filled with the love and laughter that radiated from within. She was an avid supporter of each and every one of her kids, grandkids and later great-grandkids and could often be found wherever they were competing. Her dedication didn’t end there, thus earning her the unofficial titles of Mom and Grandma at the Wellman school and her own corner in the Wildcat gym to watch the games. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Benny Hilburn; and one son in law, Joe Cavazos. She is survived by her husband Frank, 3 sons: Frank Jr and wife Fay of Brownfield, Daniel and wife Tina of Lubbock and Roy of Brownfield; 5 daughters: Lucy Frei and husband Chris of Brownfield, Mary Jiminez and husband Roel of Brownfield, Angie Cavazos of Brownfield, Lusinda of Brownfield, and Nancy Mendieta and husband Jovan of Brownfield; 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way. She is also survived by one brother Louis Hilburn of Caldwell, Tx; and 4 sisters, Mary Ellen Hernandez of Brownfield, Estella Villasenor of Amarillo, TX, Rosa Zuniga of Lubbock, TX and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.Visitation at the Brownfield Funeral Home will be on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and services are scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made in her name to the Susan B Komen Foundation.

John “Bill” Evans

The family of John “Bill” Evans of Wolfforth, Texas, will celebrate his life of 84 years Saturday, August 29, 2020, at 4:30 p.m. at Lakeridge Chapel and Memorial, Lubbock, TX (masks required). Bill passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020 from health-related complications. He was born April 25, 1936, to J.B. and Mina Rose (Evans) Staniforth in Post, TX. Bill graduated from Hale Center High School in 1954 and attended Howard Payne College on a football scholarship. He served in the U. S. Army as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division and later as a member of the Military Police. Bill and Karen (Foshee) were married March 18, 1961, celebrating 59 years in 2020. Bill worked in the cotton gin business in Lockney, Hale Center and Brownfield approximately 55 years; retiring in 2017.Bill was known for his love of family and charismatic charm which inspired devotion in others. He was a friend to all and always willing to go the extra mile for someone in need. He was a gentle giant and loved to tell stories. Bill attended Monterey Church of Christ. Survivors include Karen, 3 children Kevin (Reagan) of Ontario, CA; Rebecca Swan of Lubbock, TX; Jerry Don of Hewitt, TX; 2 brothers Bob Evans (Bev) of Plainview, TX; Maxey Evans (Norma) of Cross Plains, TX; 3 sisters Bonnie Shackelford of Austin, TX; Sue McBeth (Bobby) of Plainview, TX; Jo Alice Partin of Abilene, TX. Bill was blessed with 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Hailey Evans. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill’s memory to Lubbock Children’s Home or Meals on Wheels.

Mildred Martin Jolly

Mildred Martin Jolly, 96, of Brownfield Texas, left for her heavenly home on Sunday August 23, 2020. Mildred was born on September 16, 1923 in Konawa Oklahoma to James Amos Martin and Mattie Marie Ballman Martin. Mildred was the 3rd of 10 Children born to her parents. She grew up in Davis Oklahoma, where she met and married the love of her life, Leslie Lee Jolly on November 26, 1942, and became a military wife. Mildred is preceded in death by her husband Leslie Jolly, son in-laws Jim Turnbeaugh and Shawn Burns, her parents, and each of her siblings. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Turnbeaugh of Tucson Arizona, and Katherine Burns of Brownfield Texas, grandchildren Nicole Turnbeaugh of Tucson Arizona, Jacob Turnbeaugh and wife Rachel of Tucson Arizona, Michelle Burns Nolte and husband Kenny of Lubbock Texas, and five Greatgrandchildren, Jameson, Jaxon, and Jagger Turnbeaugh of Tucson Arizona, and Skylar and Mason Nolte of Lubbock Texas. Mildred is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Mildred was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Brownfield, Texas. There will be 2 memorial services, Calvary Baptist Church of Brownfield on Friday, August 28th at 2:00 pm. With the family being available for visitation at 1:00 pm, and Sunset Funeral Home-Northeast, in El Paso Texas on Tuesday, October 1st at 12:00 pm, with a visitation at 11:00 am, with her Committal Service at 1:30 pm at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Mildred will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
