Brownfield, Meadow, Wellman-Union back on the court after holiday break

The holiday break is the official halfway point of the school year. 18 weeks down, 18 weeks to go academically. Athletically, schools have seen the Fall sports finally put to bed the week before Christmas, with 12 football teams earning state championships in Arlington At the same time, “Spring” sports basketball, swimming, soccer and wrestling have been toiling in the background, at least at schools that made deep runs on the gridiron. Miles have been run or swum. Scrimmages have given way to tournaments, invitationals or nondistrict play. Waiting on the other side of the break are the sports most think of as the days get longer and warmer … baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track and field. Terry County basketball fans, however, will have plenty to watch before the other sports get underway when the calendar flips to 2024. The Brownfield boys basketball team went into the holiday break on a four-game winning streak and has won six of its past seven contests to move to 12-5 overall and 1-0 in District 3-3A competition with a triumph against Littlefield on Dec. 19. The Runnin’ Cubs are at the Canyon Tournament this weekend to knock off the rust from the hiatus as they prepare to get right back to district play at Lamesa on Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Cubs (6-12, 1-1) also are making one final tournament appearance in 2023, heading to the Caprock Tournament for a trio of games to get their legs and jump shots back in shape. Then, like the boys teams, they will travel to Lamesa on Tuesday for a 6:15 p.m. contest against the Tornadoes to jump right back into district play. At Meadow, the Lady Broncos (10-7, 1-2 in District 7-1A) come out of the break to face Ackerly Sands in a nondistrict game on Tuesday at Sands. Currently fourth in the district standings after having faced Whitharral (17-1, 4-0) and Whiteface (16-4, 2-0), Meadow will resume its district schedule at Morton on Jan. 5 at 6:15 p.m. The Broncos have struggled to open the season, going 1-8 before the holidays. They got back to work against Lazbuddie on Friday and will join the Lady Broncos on a trip to Sands for a 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday. Meadow will, finally, kick off district play at Morton on Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. The Wellman-Union girls basketball team will be at All Saints at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday for its first contest out of the break. The Lady Wildcats are 1-6 on the season and will open District 8-1A play against Klondike at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 5. The Wildcats boy’s basketball team is still searching for consistency on offense, averaging less than 40 points a game thus far. Wellman-Union (1-10) faced O’Donnell on Friday out of the break and will be at All Saints alongside the Lady Wildcats on Tuesday. A nondistrict game against Spur at 5 p.m. on Jan. 5 at Wellman-Union will be the final tune up before the Wildcats travel to rival Loop on Jan. 16 for the district opener. For the true “Spring” sports fans, softball teams begin practicing on Jan. 12, with baseball teams officially underway Jan. 19.
