Local schools committed to making sure refs are treated fairly

Whether officiating a laid-back recreational youth soccer game or a high-stakes basketball championship, referees have an increasingly tough job and are getting harder to find and retain. But local public school leaders told the News this week that they are committed to making sure that referees—who are hired and assigned through the University Interscholastic League, or UIL, and the local chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials, or TASO—are treated fairly.

City Council holds public hearing on 2023-2024 Fiscal Year Budget

The Brownfield City Council metThursday morning for their regularly scheduled meeting to discuss several matters. Council members Kelli Mendez, Celso Duran, J.C Tijerna, Leon Pope, Marshall Martell, Mark Williams and Jimmy Garza were all present on the quorum along with City Manager Jeff Davis, Secretary Kelly Burris and Mayor Tom Hesse. The council met to discuss several topics on the agenda, including holding a public hearing for the 20232024 Fiscal Year Budget.
