I want to congratulate the Class of 2020! Your senior year has been filled with a multitude of achievements including academic growth, multiple playoff opportunities, and restoring CUB PRIDE in our community. You have displayed the epitome of CUsRise in all that you have accomplished during the 2019-2020 school year. You have put in the hard work, dedication and tireless effort to reach this important milestone in your life. The lessons you have learned to this point, the friends you have made and the journeys you have experienced will stay with you for years to come. However, this is not the end. I challenge each of you to continue to learn, seek knowledge and make connections with people as you begin the next chapter of your life.
Read moreAt approximately 8:15 a.m. Tuesday morning, Brownfield 911 dispatched EMS and Brownfield Fire & Rescue to the scene of an automobile accident. The accident occurred at US 62/385 and County Road 474, at the entrance to Birdsong Peanuts, about three mile south of Brownfield. According to law enforcement, a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Joshua Fowler (30) of Lubbock was traveling behind a semi-truck and trailer driven by Adam Lopez (52) of Memphis, Texas in the right lane of the southbound lanes on US 62/385. According to DPS, Lopez began to make a right turn into the entrance (CR 474) of Birdsong Peanuts, and Fowler ran into the back of the peanut trailer going the posted rate of speed. According to Brownfield Fire & Rescue, it took about 46 minutes to extract Fowler from the Trailblazer, who was then care flighted to University Medical Center in Lubbock where he is listed in critical condition. Lopez, the driver of the truck, was uninjured. BRMC EMS, Brownfield Fire & Rescue, Terry County Sheriff’s Dept., Texas Highway Patrol, Wellman Fire Dept., and TxDOT all responded to the scene.
Read moreThe Brownfield ISD Board of Directors met in a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday evening, May 18 to discuss and take action on a few items. After the call to order and other preliminary activities, the board dove into the agenda items. The first item, Superintendent Chris Smith presented the canvassing of votes for the May election of the school board trustees. However, since there were only two positions available and both candidates ran unopposed, they were automatically placed in those positions. Incumbents Geoff Cooper, District 4 and Tim Swaringen, District 5 were sworn in by Terry County Clerk Kim Carter. The board was then tasked to elect officers. Trustee Cooper was retained as the board president and Trustee Swaringen was also retained as vice president, with Trustee Cat Gonzales keeping the secretary position.
Read moreEarlier this week Texas Governor Greg Abbott took to the press stage to speak about the “Phase II” of reopening of the Texas economy through his new Executive Order No. GA-23 relating to the expanded opening of Texas in response to the COVID-19 disaster. On April 27, Gov. Abbott announced Phase I of the reopening. In that presser, Gov. Abbott announced that he formed a “strike force” to help in the reopening of Texas which is led by James Huffines. He also issued minimum standard health protocols for all businesses and individuals to follow, at the same time Gov. Abbott outlined a special guidance for Texans over the age of 65 and detailed a comprehensive relief plan for nursing homes in Texas due to the COVID-19 virus.

Read moreSome much needed rain fell upon most of Terry County on Monday night, May 11. According to the official rain total for Brownfield it was just over a quarter of an inch. At the South Plains Underground Water Conservation District on Tahoka Rd., they received .44” of rain and two inches in Meadow. This type of rain will help with the farmers, however there is much more needed.

Most pastors and lay leaders across the U.S. took the recommendations seriously and began online services. Now that the coronavirus is slowing down and the Texas governor is allowing businesses to open backup, churches have already begun to return to in-person services and there are those making plans to return this Sunday, May 17.
