President Trump wants Antifa named as a terror group

With the death of George Floyd on May 25, the nation has seen plenty of rioting. What was supposed to be peaceful protests in the wake of his death has turned out to be complete chaos and uncontrolled actions by what President Trump and US Attorney General Barr believe to be Antifa and other groups associated. According to the US Department of Justice, Antifa which is short for anti-fascist is an organization that is anti-fascist and anti-capitalist, and although there is no claim to political parties, they do lean to the far left in philosophy.

Crop Year Begins With Mixed Conditions

As the first final planting date approaches for the Plains Cotton Growers service area, conditions across the region are mixed, with some growers enjoying beneficial rains that will boost their early crop and others experiencing everything from painfully dry conditions to severe weather that will force some to start over – or plant something else altogether. Planted acreage for the PCG service area is expected to be about normal, but it remains to be seen how much will be viable. In the northern parts of the PCG service area, where the May 31 final planting date is in immediate sight, most cotton has been planted and in some areas, has been for two weeks. Generally, central counties have until June 5 to plant, and southern counties have until June 10. For information on a specific county’s final planting date, contact PCG. Garza County was the target for severe weather over the Memorial Day weekend, with a confirmed tornado, damaging hail, high winds, and anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of rain in three hours. Growers from the affected area report that the ground is packed and they likely will not be able to save their planted acres. Severe storms have impacted several other counties across the region as well. Some areas in the region still are in desperate need of a rain, especially on dryland acreage. For example, West Texas Mesonet stations in Seminole, Denver City, Muleshoe, Amherst, Welch, and Plains have recorded only a few hundredths of a inch of rainfall in the month of May.

Betty Askew

Services for Betty Askew were held Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Terry County Memorial Cemetery under the direction of the Brownfield Funeral Home. Betty Lois Smith Askew was born April 22, 1931 in Mitchell Co, TX and passed May 29, 2020 in Lubbock, TX. Betty was born in Mitchell County, TX, to parents D.R. and Frankie Smith. She joined her older brother, Bob at their family home. Brother Charles Ray and Ruby Joyce joined the family at a later date. D.R. moved the family to Hockley Co. to share crop farm and later to the Needmore home place. Betty graduated Brownfield High School in 1948. She attended Draughn’s business school and had a job with a CPA prior to marriage. Betty was introduced to R.B. Askew by friends and they married April 4, 1951 in Lovington, NM. Three children were born to R.B. and Betty; Ronnie, Eddie, and Tresa. Betty and R.B. had 20 years together before R.B. died in an accident in 1971. Betty had been a farmer’s wife for 20 years and suddenly had to take care of a farm, a cotton gin and hope her children were strong enough to finish raising themselves. They were. As her children grew into adulthood, married and had children of their own, she loved her grandchildren with her whole heart. Nothing was out of her price range if one of the grandchildren wanted or needed something. Betty became a successful artist and had her own business known as “Blooms by Betty”. She loved the friendships from belonging to the Brownfield Art Association. Many family and friends still own her work. Her other great passion was her flower garden in her yard. She spent countless hours in the yard. Betty attended church at the Church of Christ her entire life. She enjoyed the fellowship of her church family and friends she had there. The last years of Betty’s life, she struggled to hang on to her identity as the Alzheimer’s took over her mind. She never lost her sharp wit and comebacks with staff at the nursing home, doctors, and family. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, husband R.B., brother Bob and sister Ruby. She is survived by sons Ronnie of Brownfield, Eddie and wife, Carolyn of Marble Falls, and daughter Tresa and husband, Steve of Brownfield, 6 grandchildren, 9 greatgrandchildren; brother Charles Ray and wife, Wanda of Meadow, sister-in-law Genevra Smith of Lubbock, brotherin-law, Dale Andrews of Brownwood, sister-in-law Christine Askew of Lubbock and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Monterey and Beyond Faith Hospice of Lubbock for their dedicated service the past few years.
