Gabriella Martinez

Gabriella Martinez, 97 passed away on October 17, 2020, in Hobbs, NM. Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at Brownfield Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Brownfield Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home. Family visitation will be held from 10am to 12pm on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at Brownfield Funeral Home. Gabriella was born in Paint Rock, TX on February 27, 1923, to Tiro and Presiliana Solz. She married Jimmy Martinez in Lamesa, TX on November 11, 1941. Gabriella moved to Brownfield in 1959 until 2014 when she moved to Hobbs, NM. She joined the Brownfield Church of Christ in 1984 and was a great example of a good Christian. She was intelligent, patient, calm, and a good mother. Gabriella was hard-working and worked in bakeries. In her later years she was a companion to the elderly. Gabriella is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jimmy Martinez; daughter, Margarita Gonzales and six sisters. Gabriella is survived by two children, Santiago Martinez and wife Olga, Rosemary Cofer and husband Greg; son-inlaw Robert Gonzales; 13 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren.

Denver City, Texas - Funeral services for Virginia Johnson (90) will be held 10:00 A.M. Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the First Baptist Church in Denver City under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home of Denver City. Officiating will be Kyle Streun. Interment in Denver City Memorial Park. Virginia Johnson, our beloved mother and MIMI passed away on October 18, 2020. She was born on October 28, 1929 in Terry County to Beatrice and Loyd Chambliss, a farming family who lived in Brownfield, Texas. Virginia was married to Carl Johnson, her sweetheart of 65 years, who is deceased. Virginia and Carl had one son Dwayne Johnson and wife Wanda from Andrews, Texas. Virginia had two granddaughters Misty Johnson from Irving, Texas and Kristy & husband Jason Crutcher from Andrews, Texas. Two great-grand daughters, Kason and Kynlee Crutcher, whom both adored their grandparent’s. Virginia had one sister Margaret Moore from Seminole, Texas, and one brother living, Lewis and his wife Jeanette Chambliss from Denver City, Texas. Two deceased brothers, L.G. Chambliss and J.C. Chambliss and many nieces and nephews. Virginia was very involved in the community; she worked for the telephone company and Shell Oil Company. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was in the choir, and a Sunday School Director. Virginia was a pink lady at the hospital in Denver City for several years. She loved hosting family gatherings and had friends over for parties as she loved to cook. She was cared for the last few years at Shinnery Oaks and Hospice of Andrews.

Cubs host Mustangs with playoff hopes alive

Following a disappointing 30-13 loss to Slaton, the Brownfield football team will look to bounce back when it hosts Denver City Friday night at Cubs Stadium at 7 p.m. The Cubs (1- 6,1-2) are currently still fighting for a spot in the playoffs and a victory over rival Mustangs (4-4,2-1) would clinch a postseason spot.

Lady Cubs win sixth straight district game

After defeating Denver City in four sets (17-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22) at home and then sweeping Dimmitt (25-8, 25-9, 25-8) on the road the Brownfield volleyball hosted Lamesa looking to keep pace with Denver City and hold onto the top spot in Region 1 District 3A. The Lady Cubs swept the Lady Tornadoes 25-11, 25-16, and 25- 21 Tuesday night to improve to 20-2 overall and 8-1 in district play, and continued to stay even with Denver City after it defeated Dimmitt in three sets.
