Some USPS services to increase this month

The United States Postal Service has raised mailing rates, effective Jan. 24, by 1.8 percent for first-class mail and 1.5 percent for other categories. However, there is no increase in the price of the First-Class Mail Forever stamp; it remains at 55 cents. The 1-ounce flat rate also stays at its current price of $1.

Stock show, clubs have rich histories

FFA and 4H members from throughout Terry County will be hoping to secure a ribbon or title in the area’s yearly stock show this month. They have worked endlessly grooming and training their animals, under the guidance of their club sponsors, and are now ready to put their projects to the test. There is much known about the exhibitors, sponsors, and even the breeds of animals. Few, however, know the history of the two major organizations that make it possible for students interested in livestock to compete at this level.

Lady Cubs finish first cycle of district unbeaten

LAMESA — When the Brownfield Lady Cubs traveled to Lamesa on Tuesday night, it was to face the final district opponent and the first road test for the Lady Cubs. By halftime there was no doubt the Lady Cubs where on their way to a sixth straight district win and more importantly a win against each member in District 3-3A. Brownfield dispatched Lamesa 73-30 putting themselves in the driver seat to win the district title.

Golden Tornadoes upset Cubs

LAMESA — The Brownfield Cubs went on the road looking to shake off the upset loss to Littlefield at home last week. They where on the road for the first time in District 3-3A visiting the Golden Tornadoes of Lamesa, a team looking to turn its season around and make a run at the playoffs. The Cubs went into the game Tuesday in second place trailing only Dimmitt for the district title and a spot in the playoffs, but after another cold start the Cubs fell to Lamesa 78-69.

Lady Broncos win first Terry County matchup

The Meadow Lady Broncos and Wellman-Union Lady ‘Cats basketball teams continued District 7-1A play on Tuesday night at Meadow. The is was the first meeting between the two Terry County teams with each team coming in with different aspirations. The Lady Broncos had only one district game played after Loop canceled due to COVID, and the Lady ‘Cats came in looking to get above .500 in district. Both were still in the fight for the district title, but it was Meadow that took a leap forward after defeating its rival 45-34.

Wildcats hold off Broncos

The Wellman-Union Wildcats and Meadow Broncos basketball teams opened District 7-1A with a Terry County matchup. Both teams came into the game having won their final non district matchup. In a close contest played at Meadow Gym, the Wildcats were able to hold off the Broncos 46-41 to open district with a road win.
