Terry County awakens to a white Sunday morning

When the residents of Brownfield, Meadow, and Wellman awoke on Sunday morning it was to the sight of snow. According to the National Weather Service Brownfield and surrounding areas had four to eight inches of snowfall. The areas with the most snowfall Sunday morning were Denver City with a total of 11 inches and Post with nine inches. Temperatures reached a high of 31.8 degrees and a low of 15.3 degrees with a .5 inch of total rain accord to West Texas Mesonet.

2021 Terry County livestock show is a go

The 2021 Terry County livestock show is set to begin tomorrow (Thursday) where it will kick off with the lamb and goat show at 5 p.m. On Friday the gilt show will begin at 9 a.m. and the barrow show will follow, and Saturday the steer show begins at 9 a.m. The stock show will be held at the Terry County Show Barn, there is no admission price for those who want to attend according to Terry County Livestock Association representative Candy Cudd. This year will be different with COVID-19 guidelines being implemented to ensure the safety of all the participants.

Mildred Elizabeth Cole

An Earth Angel was born, Mildred Elizabeth Cole, to Dewey and Mary Elizabeth (Vogel) Cole in Phillips, Texas, on July 10, 1941. She earned her Heavenly Wings on January 2, 2021. Mildred attended all twelve years in Phillips Schools and graduated from Phillips High School in 1959. She met the love of her life, Don McWhorter. After graduation, Mildred attended Draughn’s Business College and married Don on October 12, 1959, and became a Soldier’s Wife and moved to Fort Ord, California. When Don went to Korea, she came back to Texas and worked for Phillips Petroleum Company. They moved to Fort Benning, Georgia, where she had her two children, Donna in 1962 and Michael in 1964. She was active in Asbury Methodist Church. She sang in the Choir and taught Bible School. After six years the family moved to Brownfield, Texas, as the parsonage family at Parkview Methodist Church. She worked as Church Secretary and helped Don with his work at Texas Tech. They moved to Ropesville FUMC and then to Hereford Wesley Methodist Church where she worked as Church Secretary. The family moved back to Brownfield and built their home. Millie worked at Brownfield Schools as a Paraprofessional Library Aide for 18 years at Intermediate School and then at High School for 4 years before retiring in 1997. After retirement, she and Don traveled in their motorhome for 20 years and visited all 48 states, Mexico and Canada. They saw all the places she read about in Weekly Reader as a child. She was active in Brownfield First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 15 years and sang in the Choir and served many different positions on the church board. She helped found and served on the board of the Interfaith Center Thrift Store. She was active in many community activities throughout the years. Millie is survived by her husband of 61 years, Don; daughter, Donna Moore and husband Russell of Puyallup, Washington; son, Michael of Nashville, Tennessee; grandson, Eric Moore and wife Carrie of Auburn, Washington, and 2 great-granddaughters, Olivia and Kaylee Moore of Auburn, Washington. A Virtual Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, January 14, 2021, with Pastor Cameron Kirkland officiating. The service may be viewed on either the Brownfield United Methodist Facebook page or the West Texas United YouTube page . In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to FUMC Brownfield.

Jesus Flores Martinez Jr.

Jesus Flores Martinez Jr., 72, of Brownfield, Texas, passed away on January 5, 2021, surrounded by his children. He was born to parents Jesus Martinez and Elena Flores, on February 18, 1948, in Del Rio, Texas. Jesus served in the United States Army from 1967-1969 and is a Vietnam Veteran (1968-1969). He was awarded the Army Commendations Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars. He married Maria, the Love of His Life, in 1969, who survives him. Jesus is also survived by one son and four daughters. Jesus Jaime III and wife Eileen, Brenda Limon and husband Rudy, Kristy Morin, Vanessa Velasquez and husband Raul and Clarissa Huron and husband Manuel as well as 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Jesus will always be remembered to his family as their Hero! Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2021 from 10am – 8pm with a Rosary at 6pm at Brownfield Funeral Home. Funeral Service with Military Honors will be on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 10am at Brownfield Cemetery.
