Charleen Armstrong Pettiet

Ropesville - Charleen Armstrong Pettiet passed away on April 20, 2021 at the age of 84 surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness. Charleen was born on June 13, 1936 in Ropesville, Texas to Marshall and Kathleen Armstrong. She grew up in Ropesville and graduated from Ropes High School in 1954. She married her high school sweetheart, Alton “Pete” Pettiet, at First Baptist Church of Ropesville on June 6, 1954. Except for a twelve year period when she and Pete lived in the Texas Panhandle, Charleen lived in the Ropesville Community all of her life. Charleen worked at the Ropes School tax office, was a farmer’s wife, and then ended her work career as an Insurance Agent with Germania Insurance Company after thirty-one years. Charleen accepted Jesus as her savior as young girl and loved serving others at her church and in her community. She served on the Ropes Cemetery Association, Ropes Senior Citizens Board, the Hockley County Historical Association, and as Director of Hockley County Senior Citizen Board. Charleen is survived by her husband, Alton “Pete” Pettiet, of Ropesville, Texas; her daughter, Cliffa Herron (Grady), of Brownfield, Texas; her son Bradley Pettiet (Karon) of Lubbock, Texas; her sister Sandra McNabb of Ropesville, Texas; five grandchildren, Micah Riddle (Curtis) of Dallas, Texas, Tyler Herron of Austin, Texas, Lauren Thacker (Kevin) of SE Asia, Jordon Hickner (Brian) of Great Falls, Montana, and Emily Stabeno (Kadon) of Williamsburg, Virginia; five great grandchildren, Regan Riddle, Nytlie Herron, Rhett Riddle, Nora Hickner, and Riley Thacker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall and Kathlean Armstrong, and great granddaughter, Karsyn Lee Thacker. Visitation was held Thursday, April 22, 2021, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway, Lubbock. Services were held on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Ropesville with burial followed at the Ropesville Cemetery. The family requests memorials be made to Alton “Pete” and Charleen Pettiet Honorary Scholarship at South Plains College at 1401 S. College Ave., Levelland, Texas 79336.

USDA Expands and Renews Conservation Reserve Program in Effort to Boost Enrollment and Address Climate Change

WASHINGTON, April 21, 2021 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today that USDA will open enrollment in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) with higher payment rates, new incentives, and a more targeted focus on the program’s role in climate change mitigation. Additionally, USDA is announcing investments in partnerships to increase climate-smart agriculture, including $330 million in 85 Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) projects and $25 million for On-Farm Conservation Innovation Trials. Secretary Vilsack made the announcement today at the White House National Climate Task Force meeting to demonstrate USDA’s commitment to putting American agriculture and forestry at the center of climate-smart solutions to address climate change.

Lady Cubs fall short in bid for co-district title

LAMESA – The Brownfield softball team made a short trip to play the undefeated Lady Tornadoes in Lamesa. The last time these two teams faced off the Lady Cubs lost 9-5 at home and knew a win would give them a share of the District 3-3A championship, but a loss would hand Lamesa the outright title. After seven innings the Lady Cubs lost to Lamesa 8-1 and watched the Lady Tornadoes celebrate on their home field and with their fans.

TORNADOES HOLD OFF LATE CUBS RALLY

LAMESA – After defeating Muleshoe and securing fourth place in district and a spot in the playoffs, the Brownfield baseball team traveled to Lamesa looking for its first winning streak in district and a chance to climb up in the standing. The last time the Cubs and Tornadoes played, the Cubs forced extra innings with a 10 run seventh inning.
