Wildcats defeat Petersburg JV on the road

The Wellman Union boys’ basketball team defeated the Petersburg Junior Varsity squad 42-35 on Friday, January 7. The Wildcats played on the road and were able to ride a strong defensive pressure to hold off the home team and secure a road win. Levi DePoyster led the Wildcats with 11 points and Julius Alaniz added 10 points in the win. Wellman held Petersburg to five points in the first quarter and seven in the second and third quarterz. The Wildcats offense scored 12 in the first, 14 in the second, and 12 in the third to secure a road win.

Lady 'Cats fall in district road opener

The Wellman-Union girls’ basketball team fell to Whiteface 54-20 in its District 7-1A opener on Tuesday night. Sadie Crowley led the Lady ‘Cats with 7 points and Kenzie Harp added 6 points in the loss. The Lady ‘Cats struggled offensively in the first half scoring only 6 points by halftime. They were able to get a rhythm in the third quarter scoring 13 points but any chance of a comeback was stopped when Whiteface held Wellman to 1 point in the fourth quarter.

The Brownfield City Council members met for their first meeting of 2022 on Thursday morning with the task of discussing and proceeding with the cost of repairs for the east and west water towers. Brownfield Director of Water and Wastewater James Nix gave his report to the council on the repairs done to the east tower and the cost of repairs. He explained what is happening at the west tower and the concern he is facing at the cost of repairs being more than they originally estimated. The council also received the quarterly reports from the director of streets and sanitation departments.
