Read moreSummer is here, and high school students have stepped away from school and now have the time, and the opportunity, to earn money and gain work experience. But where are they working and why? And what skills will they learn along the way? A local high school senior working at Sonic says his main reason for working there is “money.” He explained that he has to pay for his car, a mustang. He said that he’s enjoyed working because of the friends he’s made, he smiled and motioned toward the two women standing on either side of him. He said that he has learned money management through his job and that he would take that skill with him throughout his life.

So the rising gas prices, he says, hit his fixed monthly income hard. At the pump he showed that he wasn’t filling up his truck, he was putting just enough in the tank to get to Lubbock. When asked what adjustments he was making in his life he answered, “I just don’t go anywhere anymore.” With the rising gas prices people everywhere are having to cut back on their driving, and in some cases eliminate what would have been a fun life experience. Like last week, when a family told the Brownfield News that they canceled a family vacation they had been planning since last year because of the high gas prices.
