YMCA set to expand

Demolition is complete and construction will begin soon on an addition to the YMCA, which will reopen at its original location this Spring.

A condemned roof forced the YMCA to abandon its location, 302 Lubbock Rd., last year for a temporary site north of Brownfield.

But insurance proceeds and a generous donation will allow the not-for-profit organization to move home by April.…

Lady Cats season comes to a close

GUILTY: Carrillo convicted in murder of former Brownfield residents

A Lubbock judge sentenced a 32-year-old man to life in prison without parole after a 12-member jury convicted him of capital murder in the April 2015 killings of his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend at a home in West Lubbock.

After an hour-long deliberation Thursday, jurors returned to the 137th District Court with a verdict finding David Carrillo guilty of capital murder in the shooting deaths of Jennifer Cruz and Albert Martinez, both formerly of Brownfield.…

Cubs take second in tourney bracket

The Brownfield Cubs performed well in the Monahans Invitational Tournament over the Christmas break.

The boys started the tourney with a 64-52 win over Midland Christian, led by Brock Sires with 15 points.

Nunie Ramirez and Jeronimo Quintanilla were good for 13 points each and Deveen Reed posted 12. Zach Muniz added nine points and Caleb Martinez rounded out scoring with two.…

Local ambulance service gets new home in historic building

One of Brownfield oldest and most historic buildings will soon take on a new life, thanks to an intergovernmental agreement between the City and Hospital.

The former headquarters of the Brownfield Police Department, 120 N. 5th Street, will become the home of the local ambulance service in roughly 90 days.

Preliminary design work has begun to remodel the building’s interior to convert office space into livable conditions for the ambulance service’s seven full time and four part time employees, who are on call all hours of the day and night.…

Council approves ballpark resolution

The Brownfield City Council adopted a resolution Thursday morning that sets in motion a years-long proposal to remake and rebuild the city-owned youth baseball and softball complex on the south side of Coleman Park.

The resolution states that the city will reallocate Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) Funds to pay for the “enhancement, maintaining and upgrading” of the fields, beginning in the city’s next budget cycle, which begins Oct.1 of this year.…
