Brownfield City Council approves plan to cover electricity bill from winter storm

The Brownfield City Council held an emergency meeting on Thursday, March 25 to discuss the impact Winter Storm Uri had on the city, especially its electricity demand. Uri hit the town and the state from Feb. 12 -19, which brought snow, ice, blackouts, frozen pipes, and even more damages. After the storm, the state’s electrical grid, ERCOT, came under scrutiny for not providing power to the residents and after the storm for the huge amount it charged residents who had power during the storm.

South Plains Public Health District

South Plains Public Health District held a drive thru clinic to administer the second dose of the COVID vaccine to those who received the first one from them. They also offered the first dose of the vaccine. There was a long line that went around the Brownfield Fire and Police Department. South Plains Public Health District offered both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine.

Meadow ISD votes on mask policy

The Meadow ISD had originally planned to meet on Monday, March 22 after Spring Break to decide on what or if any changes would be made to their mask policy. This stems from Gov. Abbott announcing his Executive Order GA-34, where he lifted the mask policy and opened the state to 100 percent.

Terry County Law Enforcemnet Center has started visitation once again

We have implemented a plan to start visitation for the public and the inmates. We have set up a plan to have visitation on scheduled days and scheduled times for each individual pod. We have also set up a 20- minute timeframe between visitations, where jail staff is able to have sufficient time to disinfect the area. We have this plan in place to help limit the number of people allowed at one time. We have shut down phones in-between each other to allow the 6 feet of social distancing.

Brownfield Board of Trustees approve projects for middle and high school

After holding the last Board of Trustees meeting via Zoom due to the winter storms, the Brownfield ISD meeting was held in person on Monday, March 22. The Board canceled the elections for the two at-large seats as incumbents Will Hawkins and Cat Gonzalez ran unopposed. After the Board voted unanimously to certify the two incumbents, the meeting turned to next year and dealing with what remains for the new high school and the middle school.

Chris Harlan

Chris Harlan, 78, of Seagraves, TX, was called home on March 24, 2021 in her home surrounded by her family. Chris Harlan started her journey on October 31, 1942, in Fresno, CA, to Gloyd and Willie Cloe. She married the love of her life, Billy Ray Harlan, on August 30, 1958 in El Paso, TX. Chris worked as a bank teller at Brownfield State Bank and Seagraves State Bank. She was an avid gardener and loved cooking for family and friends. Chris loved Jesus and loved singing in the choir and cooking fruit pies. Her greatest joy was her family and being “Mom” only became sweeter when she became “Nana.” Chris Harlan was proceeded in death by her parents, Gloyd and Willie Cloe, and, son, James Ray Harlan. Chris is survived by husband Billy Ray Harlan of Seagraves, TX; son, Bobby Harlan and wife Karen of Seagraves, TX; daughter, Christine Stucks and husband Stan of Odessa, TX; daughter, Cathy Crow and husband Benny of Seagraves, TX; brothers, Chuck Cloe and Bob Cloe; grandchildren, Brad Harlan, Crystal Barton, Alishia Wyman, Kyle Crow, Candace Searcy, and Kyra Crow; and 12 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Brad Harlan, Brandon Barton, Ross Wyman, Kyle Crow, Jarod Searcy, and Beau Barton. Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s. Family visitation was from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Ratliff Funeral Home, 312 12 th St., Seagraves, TX. Funeral Services were held at First Assembly of God, Seagraves, TX, on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with burial services following at the Gaines County Seagraves Cemetery.
