Dale Nichols

Memorial services for Dale Nichols, 79, will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2021 in the Ratliff Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Greg Breedlove officiating and Masonic services will be rendered. Services under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home of Brownfield. He died Thursday, May 27, 2021 in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. He was born May 29, 1941 in Lamesa, Texas to the late Fred Nichols and Thelma Marks Nichols. He farmed and raised cattle, goats and sheep. He attended school in Coahoma and Seminole and was a member of the Church of Christ and was 32 nd degree Mason with Masonic Lodge #903. He was preceded in death by a brother Donald Nichols. Survivors include; two sons; Clay Nichols of Brownfield and Tray Nichols of Delaware; a daughter Lauri Beavers and her husband Matt of Ft. Worth, Texas; a brother Alfred Nichols and his wife Hilda of Seagraves also five grandchildren.

Producers with Crop Insurance to Receive Premium Benefit for Cover Crops

WASHINGTON, June 1, 2021 – Agricultural producers who have coverage under most crop insurance policies are eligible for a premium benefit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) if they planted cover crops during this crop year. The Pandemic Cover Crop Program (PCCP), offered nationally by USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA), helps farmers maintain their cover crop systems, despite the financial challenges posed by the pandemic.

H.B. 2089 Signed by Governor Abbott and Boll Weevil Eradication Funding Receives Approval

Texas H.B. 2089 has been signed by Governor Greg Abbott and will be enacted beginning September 1, 2021. The bill provides up to $500,000 in funding over the next Texas biennium for early detection of foreign plant pests and diseases, including but not limited to Race 4 Fusarium wilt (FOV4) which is currently present in the El Paso region.

Cubs basketball play in summer league

The Brownfield boys’ basketball team participated in the Frenship Tiger summer basketball association summer league with back to back games on the first night of the four week schedule. The Cubs played the first week at Lubbock Cooper High School Auxiliary gym, with the Cubs winning the first game against Roosevelt 44-36, but losing the second game 74-63 to Olton in the varsity division. In the first game against Roosevelt, the two teams played a back and forth game trading baskets. The Cubs held a slim 23-22 lead after the first 20 minutes, and came out and hit shots early in the second half. In the second game, Brownfield went into the half trailing 25-24, but fatigue hurt the Cubs in the second half as Olton went on to build a 14 point lead before the Cubs made a run in the final five minutes to cut the lead to single digits. The Cubs next two games will be on Tuesday, June 8 at Frenship High School junior varsity gym. Game 1 will be against Littlefield and game 2 will be played right after against Idalou, with tip off set for 8 p.m.

Brownfield Cubs baseball has five selected to All-District

The Brownfield baseball team finished the season 6-9-2 overall and 2-6 in District 3-3A and qualified for the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. The Cubs faced the District 4-3A champions Tornillo Coyotes in a three-game series in which the Cubs lost both games, but came close to forcing a winner take all third game before losing on a walk-off single in extra innings.
