PART 2 - The “roaring 20s” would seem far away to the Sears, McLeroy, and other families in frontier West Texas. Both families had come west from East Texas to Haskell County and on to Terry County - in the mid teens. Along with other early 1900s seekers of more and cheaper land, blocks of native pasture land still existed on most of their 80, 160 or 320 acre farms. Horse and mule teams pulled mostly one row planters, “go-devils” (slides with long steel knives to cut weeds), cultivators and wagons for the crops of cotton, corn, maize and “bundled feed.” Human power would do the hoeing, harvesting, and the host of other “before daylight to after dark” chores.
