The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs hit the road Tuesday night looking to remain undefeated in district play and did just that as they defeated the Muleshoe smiles 72-41. It was a tighter contested first quarter than most would’ve anticipated but in the final minute of the first both JoJo Carrillo and Jeron Lawrence knocked down a three point shot to get Brownfield a 20-12 lead at the end of the first.

Origins of Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, in the United States, is a holiday (third Monday in January) honoring the achievements of Martin Luther King, Jr. A Baptist minister who advocated the use of nonviolent means to end racial segregation, he first came to national prominence during a bus boycott by African Americans in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955. He founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957 and led the 1963 March on Washington. The most influential of African American civil rights leaders during the 1960s, he was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination in public accommodations, facilities, and employment, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

BMS Civil Air Patrol cadets get flight experience

The excitement of flight struck the Brownfield Middle School Civil Air Patrol cadets. On Saturday, 30 December, eleven sixth and seventh graders had the opportunity to fly in a Cessna 172 over the south plains of Texas. A major part of the curriculum for these cadets in the classroom setting is aerospace education and STEM, and they have just completed their first unit on an introduction to flight. Each cadet is allowed five front seat flights in Civil Air Patrol owned aircraft with funding provided by the US Air Force.

Davis explains inflated numbers to council members

The Brownfield City Council met Thursday morning for their regularly scheduled meeting to discuss several items on the agenda. Council members Kelli Mendez, J.C. Tijerina, Celso Duran, Leon Pope, Marshall Martell, Mark Williams and Jimmy Garza were all present on the quorum, along with City Manager Jeff Davis, City Secretary Kelly Burris, City Attorney Matt Wade and Mayor Tom Hesse.
