The Brownfield golf team competed today at the Reese Golf Center tournament along with several other teams from the district. The Cubs placed 6th overall in tournament play. Individually KJ Carroll led the team with a final score of 203. Carroll shot a 111 in the first round and A 92 in the second round to lead the Cubs.

The Cubs and Lady Cubs each had a student athlete with amazing performances at the Cub Relays. Nathaniel Luna racked up a total of 24 points, taking first place in the 100 M Dash with an impressive 10.50. Later, Luna took first place in the 200 M Dash with a 21.50. The Lady Cubs Meriah Gonzalez also had herself an amazing day bringing the team 33 points. Gonzalez got 2nd in the 200 M Dash with a 27.18. She also ran the 3rd leg in the 4x200 M Relay and the team took 1st with a 1:52.94. Gonzalez ran the 2nd leg on the 4x400 M Relay. The Lady Cubs took 2nd with a 4:29.61. In her field events she placed 2nd in Long Jump with a 16’-7”. Gonzalez received 1st place in Triple jump with a 33’-11 1/4. The Lady Cubs did take second overall at the meet with 117 points and the Cubs took fifth overall at the Cub Relays with 87 points.
Read moreLAMESA – The Brownfield Cubs baseball team traveled to Lamesa in District 3-3A play and lost 7-4 on Saturday, April 2. The Cubs trailed 2-0 at the end of the first inning but tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning. The tie did not last long with Lamesa scoring a run in the bottom of the third against Brownfield to lead 3-2, and added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cubs were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, but added a run in the top of the sixth to trail 5-3. Yet the defense could not keep the home team scoreless as Lamesa added its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brownfield went into the final inning trailing 7-3, and added a run but could not find a way to tie or take the lead. Head Coach Eric Morin spoke on his team’s performance. “It wasn’t the best, we definitely played better,” he said. “We did have a little run there in the end, we were still in the fight. But it’s a varsity sport and when you start getting behind it’s very difficult to come back. We have done it before but it didn’t go our way today.”

The district tournament was played between the Wildcats and Lady ‘Cats, Whiteface, and Loop. At the end of the tournament, Wellman Union had four players qualify for the Class 1A Regional tournament on April 11 and 12 at South Plains College, and five who medaled. Mixed doubles team of Mary Garcia and Darien Munoz came in second place, and the girl’s doubles team of McKenzie Harp and Kaley Cavazos came in second to qualify for regional and Van Underwood came in third place in boy’s single, missing out on regional by a spot. Head Coach Crista Gray spoke on her team’s performance.

The afternoon game was a match up between the top two undefeated teams vying for the top spot in the district. The Lady Cubs were in an uphill battle from the bottom of the first inning and tried to make a final run in the sixth inning but it fell short.
