Jesus “JJ” Martinez who was named Dave Campbell’s Texas High School Quarterback of the Week for Class 3A picked up where he left off as he connected with JoJo Carrillo for a 33- yard touchdown to open the scoring for the Cubs. Towards the end of the first quarter with 59 seconds left Martinez would hit Carrillo again for another score making it 14-0 at the end of the first. To open the second quarter senior George Rivera came down with a huge interception to stop the momentum the Hornets were trying to build. The ensuing drive Brownfield would go 99 yards to the endzone capped off by Rivera breaking open downfield for a 75-yard touchdown reception making the score 20-0. The Cubs would score one more time in the second half as Carrillo reeled in another 19-yard touchdown grab extending the lead to 27-0 going into the locker room. The third quarter things slowed down for the Cub offense and but the defense remained stout only allowing Tulia to strike paydirt once so going into the 4 th quarter Brownfield still maintained a 27-7 lead.
