The Brownfield girls’ basketball team had to wait an extra eight days to open the 2020-21 season after its home game against Ft. Stockton was canceled. That made the home game against Lubbock Christian on Saturday the season home opener. The Lady Cubs, who came into the game as Texas Association of Basketball Coaches preseason ranked No. 13, grounded the Lady Eagles 71-48 behind its up-tempo offensive.

Yet Saturday afternoon was not a great offensive showing for the Cubs as they lost at home 60-33. On the offensive end, the Cubs struggled to run head coach Zayne McPherson’s offense, create open looks, driving lanes, and hit any open looks. The struggles on the offensive end leaked into the defense as the home team lost the rebound battle and let the Eagles have multiple chances. The Cubs coach took full responsibility for the sloppy showing on Saturday.

Read moreThe Meadow girls’ basketball team was on the road Saturday morning and returned home with a 35-27 win over Motley County. The game started slow with Meadow (1-1) jumping out to an early 7-2 lead that it never relinquished. The second quarter saw the Lady Broncos hit a hot streak outscoring their opponent 12-6 to go into the half with a 19-8 lead. After the break, both teams found ways to score with Meadow and Motley County scoring 10-10, but the Lady Broncos led 29-18. Meadow dropped the fourth quarter losing 9-6, but it held on to get its first win of the young season.
