Seagraves man shot, killed in Brownfield

June 5, 2018

A 19-year-old Seagraves man is dead following a shooting incident early Tuesday morning near a popular Brownfield park.

Evan Tyrese Anderson of Seagraves was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Angie Garza at the intersection of 3rd and West Ripley shortly after midnight Tuesday morning.

According to police reports obtained by the Brownfield News, dispatchers received frantic calls from a female at 12:14 a.m. reporting an altercation. The dispatcher heard gunfire while on the phone.

Officers found Anderson lying in the street near the curb on the southeast corner of the intersection. They attempted CPR, but were unable to resuscitate the victim.

Also shot was 20-year-old Brownfield resident Jim Mojica.

He suffered a bullet wound to the leg and was transported by ground ambulance to University Medical Center in Lubbock.

Police believe the shooter is a juvenile from Seagraves, but the name was withheld because of the suspect’s age and the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Also involved was a female from Seagraves, who was seen screaming and crying near the body as police and paramedics worked the scene.

Mojca was shot in the alley behind his home on 2nd Street, where police believe the disturbance began.

The reason the Seagraves residents were in Brownfield and in the alley behind 2nd Street remains under investigation.

Anderson was taken to Lubbock for an autopsy and results were pending at press time Tuesday.

Investigators returned to the alley after sun-up to continue combing the scene for evidence.

Police Chief Tony Serbantez told the News that all parties are cooperating with investigators, but declined to comment further, except to say that this is the first murder in Brownfield in 2018.
