Cubs tennis update

March 1, 2017

Following their recent success in Monahans, the Cubs Tennis team traveled to Hereford last week where they competed in the Herford Open. Jarys Boyd led the way with a girls singles championship. She defeated Lubbock Cooper 6–1, 6–1, in the finals to take the gold.

Tucker Richolson and Dylan Dyer showed well in boys singles, with Richolson taking second and Dyer finishing third. Boys doubles also fared well, with Nick Salazar and Jeremy Morin finishing fourth.

Brownfield was the only 4A team competing in the tournament, facing all 5A foes.

Coach Hammons commented that “this was a tough tournament for our players and the competition will serve them well later on. Jarys showed that she is among the best girl singles players at any division in our area. Our boys played very well and will be extremely competitive as we proceed forward. This tournament should lead us to better things as the spring develops.  We have seen improvements in many areas over the past few tournaments.  A few weeks ago, Carrina Garcia was asked to play out of her comfort zone and represent the Cubs in singles competition where she went undefeated.  She was a true team player and put the true strength of our team on display.  This is a team that encourages and supports each other, they are a lot of fun to watch.”
