One teenager was killed and two of his brothers were sent to a Lubbock hospital with severe injuries Wednesday after the pickup they were in collided with an 18-wheeler loaded with peanuts south of Brownfield.

Dispatchers alerted first responders to the accident shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 385 near Birdsong Peanuts. The vehicles involved were quickly engulfed in flame as bystanders tried desperately to dislodge the pickup and get its occupants out.

Patrick Daley, 17, of Lubbock, did not survive the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene. His brothers James, 19, and Bartley, 9, were pulled from the wreckage and taken by ambulance to University Medical Center in Lubbock with “incapacitating injuries” according to a DPS press release.

A UMC spokesperson told the Brownfield News that James was discharged early Friday morning and Bartley remained in the hospital in “satisfactory” condition, but was expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the semi, 55-year-old Jon Wade McKechnie of Gorman, was not injured in the mishap. The semi was owned by Early Trucking Company, which has a company location in Brownfield.

The truck was in the northbound lanes of the divided highway when the pickup struck it from behind.

Witnesses describe a chaotic scene as they approached the wreck moments after it occurred.

Jody Jones told Lubbock news station KCBD that he rammed the wrecked pickup with his own vehicle to dislodge it from the wreckage of the semi.

Jones then pulled the youngest Daley brother from the burning pickup.

Firefighters from Brownfield and Wellman battled the raging vehicle fires, as well as several grass fires ignited by flying embers. The fire department was called back out to the scene three times Wednesday night to extinguish grass fires that flared up.

The roadway suffered extensive damage and was closed for several hours while TxDOT workers milled out the ruined pavement and resurfaced the area. The highway was opened to traffic Thursday morning.
