Eagles too much for Wildcats, Lady ‘Cats

Wellman-Union suffered another unfortunate loss Friday night with a trip to O’Donnell.

The Wildcats’ latest defeat in a frustrating, so-far-winless season was 32-70 against the Eagles. They were down 2-19, 9-43 and 16-59 after each of the first three quarters.

Head Coach JoeBob Ussery attributed the loss mostly to missed baskets.

"We never got off the bus for the first half of this game,” he said. "We missed several lay-up opportunities and couldn’t knock down any shots. The second half we came out and competed, but we have to find four quarters of consistency.”

Scorers included Luis Gonzales 9, Braden Caldwell 8, Martin Loewen 7, Robert Steiger 3, Kirk Martin 2 and Nathaniel Steiger 2.

The Lady ‘Cats suffered a smaller loss to O’Donnell, at 45-57. They trailed a few points behind the Lady Eagles the first three quarters and actually outscored them in the fourth, but not enough for any change of a game-changing comeback.

"The girls played hard for four quarters,” said Head coach Todd Ellis. "I thought we did well shooting free throws and working the ball. We keep missing the shots at the blocks right under the basket. We will keep trying to get better.”

Rosa Olivas led with 14 points, followed by Sierra Wheatley and Tori Browne with 12 each.

The Lady ‘Cats are now 2-5 in district and 4-14 overall.

The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will be back home Tuesday to host the tough and talented Borden County, then travel to Loop next Friday.
