County hoopers head to playoffs

Local basketball teams will begin their post-season runs Tuesday.

The Brownfield Cubs will tip off against the Dalhart Golden Wolves at 6 p.m. in the First United Bank Center on the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon.

Lady Cats season comes to a close

The Wellman-Union Lady Cats saw their basketball season come to an end Tuesday night with a 54-39 loss to the Whiteface Lady Lopes.

Cubs take second in tourney bracket

The Brownfield Cubs performed well in the Monahans Invitational Tournament over the Christmas break.

The boys started the tourney with a 64-52 win over Midland Christian, led by Brock Sires with 15 points.

Nunie Ramirez and Jeronimo Quintanilla were good for 13 points each and Deveen Reed posted 12. Zach Muniz added nine points and Caleb Martinez rounded out scoring with two.…

Frenship stops Lady Cubs in Caprock Opener

The Fibermax Caprock Classic is the largest basketball tournament in the nation each year and the Lady Cubs opened the bracket play against a tough 6A Frenship squad Thursday night in Lubbock High School’s gym.

Cats headed to playoffs

The Wellman-Union Wildcats are playoff bound after a decisive 65-30 victory over the Grady Wildcats.

W-U found paydirt early with a 50-yard touchdown run by Isiah Hood.  

Grady took the lead early in the second with a touchdown and PAT.

Cubs tennis advances

The Brownfield tennis team faced off against the Perryton Rangers in the bi-district round of the class 4A playoffs last week.  

Brownfield was able to pick up key wins at the top boys line and the number three girls line to give the Cubs an early 6-1 advantage.

Two PRs pace Wildcats run

September 27, 2017

The Wellman-Union Wildcats and Lady Cats made a good showing at Mae Simmons Park in the Lubbock Invitational Cross Country Meet.

Brodey Yates ran a personal best of 17:37.7 to finish the three mile run with an 8th place medal in the 1A Boys division. 

Hunter Neill came in 52nd and Rigo Rios was 59th  to complete the boys runners.  On the Lady Cats side, Ally Mixon finished 29th in the two mile run with a personal best of 14:12.7 and Jade Griffiths came in 36th with a personal best time of 14:19.1. 

The next action for Wellman-Union comes in Sundown on September 30.…
