Lady Cats make historic run to the playoffs

The Wellman-Union Lady Cats did something this week that has never been done before. By beating Rotan in volleyball, the Ladies qualified for post-season play for the first time in history. Amazing, considering the program is only in its fourth year.

Seniors Jordan Conner and Danae Steiger have been with the program since its beginning, and are getting to enjoy the fruits of their labors.…

Council approves land deal

Following a brief discussion Thursday morning, the Brownfield City Council agreed to pay $22,500 for “the final piece of the puzzle” of the planned Duck Pond expansion.

The council ratified the deal negotiated by city officials with Len Harlan to purchase the 1.5 acre tract at the northwest corner of Gilham Park at the corner of Tahoka Hwy and Sage.…

Lady Cubs fight hard against Seminole

The Lady Cubs played a tough Seminole Maiden volleyball team to a close three set match on Tuesday night. The scores for the match were 25-22, 25-12 and 25-18.

Leading the way with six kills was Gisella Martinez, followed by Emma Powell and Zayrian Martinez with three a piece.

Taryn Longoria had 16 set assists and Abigail Saenz had an impressive 21 digs.…

Fire Dept. planning underway

With a unanimous vote Thursday morning the Brownfield City Council authorized Lubbock engineering firm Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper to move forward with architecture and design for a new fire department, almost a decade after preliminary drawings of the building were proposed.

The new state-of-the-art facility will add 8,364 square feet to the Public Safety Building a block east of the Lubbock Hwy between Broadway and Main streets.…

Local pumps 40¢ higher than Lubbock

Average retail gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 0.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.00/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 gas outlets in Texas.

Pumps in Brownfield remained locked at $2.19/g this week, almost 40 cents per gallon higher than those in Lubbock, which were at $1.82/g.…

First bale ginned, Long time county gin closes

Terry County harvest 2016 is well underway and the first bale of cotton came off the stand on Friday, October 14 at 4:59 p.m. J and S Farms brought in the first bale, weighing in at 395 pounds. This bale was ginned at Southwest Cotton Growers Gin.

In sad news having to do with harvest, West Gin closed after last season after 57 years of operation as West Gin.…
