New hospital discussed

Six months into the job as CEO of Brownfield Regional Medical Center, Jerry Jasper revealed to the hospital board during his monthly report on Monday, that he will begin looking at plans for a new hospital.

However, unlike the contentious and ultimately unsuccessful $44 million bond election three years ago, Jasper will seek ways for the hospital to fund the project through its own revenues instead of asking local tax payers to foot the bill.…

School board reviews scores

The Brownfield ISD Board of Trustees met on Monday night, June 19 to work a lengthy agenda.

Of most interest on the agenda were the preliminary testing scores from school year 2016-17.

The accolades continue to come in for the The Brownfield Cubs following the 2017 baseball season.

Head Coach Bart Upchurch announced this week that 10 Cubs were named to the All District roster.

Tennis wrap up

The Brownfield Cubs tennis team took 10 qualifiers to the 4A regional tournament, hosted at the McLeod Tennis Center, on the campus of Texas Tech University.  

The Cubs fought hard as their season came to an end with fierce competition all around.

The Lady Cats of Wellman-Union finished in 4th place in the Whiteface Antelope Relays with 75 points.  

The following finishers placed in various events:

Gracen Key: 1st in the 3200 m run, 800 m dash, and 1600 m run (new meet record of 5:55.41)
Danae Steiger:  1st in the 100 m hurdles and 3rd in the 300 m hurdles
Carmelita Alaniz: 1st in the Long Jump
Mercedes Alaniz: 4th in the Long jump and 5th in the Triple Jump
Jade Griffiths:  5th in the 800 m dash

Local woman’s murderer sentenced

A Lubbock courtroom Thursday, was the scene of confessed murderer Ruben Ramos III learning he had received a life sentence from the jury for the murder of Brownfield native Nakasha Nolan.

A video was played of a jailhouse visit with Ramos’ sister a day before his trial started. In the video, he shared how he planned to hurt the victim’s family in court if they showed any pleasure at his sentencing.…

Preliminary scores look good for Brownfield campuses

Preliminary standardized test results released this week look positive for Brownfield ISD and each of its testing campuses.

While official results won’t be released by the state until August, the figures reviewed Wednesday indicate that Brownfield ISD will earn the “Met Standard” designation later this summer.

Fire Dept. gets go-ahead

The long-planned new home for the Brownfield Fire Department took a big step toward reality Thursday when the city council approved plans and instructed the engineering firm to begin the process of finalizing drawings and seeking bids for construction.
